You Think You Are a Mystic?—40 Signs That Say You Are

Have you ever felt that there may be more to life than just going through your daily motions? Have you ever sensed a mysterious presence in your life that has been guiding you through the ebb and flow of life? Have you ever felt a vacuum within you—a feeling of hole in the heart—despite accomplishing every goal you set out to accomplish? If you did, then read on… it may be that you are blossoming into a mystic.

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom the emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand wrapped in awe, is as good as dead—his eyes are closed. The insight into the mystery of life, coupled though it be with fear, has also given rise to religion. To know what is impenetrable to us really exists, manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty, which our dull faculties can comprehend only in their most primitive forms—this knowledge, this feeling is at the center of true religiousness.

Mystic

Mystic Pattern

In this modern day, when everyone is trying to infuse the word “science” into everything from religion to cooking to anything that you can think of, use of the word “mystic” or calling yourself as such raises a few eyebrows. Some look at you curiously like you are some kind of an alien or worse yet like you have gone “cookooooo!” Some direct their condescension towards you and demand that you give them the “scientific proof.” Many people are confused by the word mystic conjuring up images of people with matted locks wearing saffron or white robes, long flowing beards, or with a clean shaven facade leading the life of celibate monks. Those who demand scientific proof forget that mathematics and physics have their roots in mysticism before they were forced to divorce themselves from their parent.

Every famous scientist ever to walk this earth was a mystic in his own way. For example, Pythogoras, Newton, Einstein, Oppenheimer, Srinivasa Ramanujan (mathematician from India) and Davinci were all mystics. Siddhas and yogis of India were scientists trying to understand their and the universe’s origins.

Yoga, according to Siddha Pathanjali, means, “Cessation of fluctuations in consciousness.” Yoga, which is but one of the many paths for self-realization, is more than 5000 year-old psychospiritual and psychosomatic science which deals with the integration of body, mind and spirit for the overall well-being of the human who is not just a physical body overrun with chemical reactions and mechanical vibrations, but an emotional and thoughtful being.

These yogis, siddhas or mystics started with the same questions that modern physicists have been asking for the past few centuries, “Where did this universe come from? Where did I come from? Who am I?” and so on, starting first with the world seen outside by their physical eyes. Through their investigations they found that there was a link between our inner world of experience and the world seen outside. They realized that whenever their inner world of experience changed their perception of the outside world changed as well. That realization gave rise to the comprehensive system of yoga science. Thus, in ancient Indian literature, several models (yes, models or pointers) were proposed describing how the universe came about.

Before we go any further, let me define the words mystic and mysticism to set the tone for the rest of this article.

  • Mystic—One who believes that there is more to reality than what is seen by the physical eyes and apprehended by the intellect, and sees the whole of life and the universe as a mystery to be unraveled. She/he is a scientist of the inner world as she/he knows that inner world is projected on to and seen as the outer world.
  • Mysticism—Is a path tread by the mystic in trying to unravel the mysteries of the universe and life, and getting to the absolute truth of existence.

Signs That You Are a Mystic

  14. You get mystical dreams and dream visitations by sages, saints and angels.
  15. You feel a strong connection to everything around you.

  17. You are comfortable with—maybe even excited about—the uncertainty of not knowing what the next moment will bring.

  25. You are independent and defy convention, but you are not arrogant.
  26. You see all as your equals, and not different from you.
  27. You are mistreated by someone, you don’t blame or complain, but you introspect and see what thoughts, feelings and energy that you are projecting that made the other person behave in that manner.
  28. Conscious living is your life’s purpose and you love to help anybody who wants to live consciously.
  29. Self-Surrender and Self-Awareness are your goals, too. You practice being aware of and surrendering to the Higher (deeper) Self/Divine Self (or whatever name you choose to give it) within you, every moment.
  30. You truly believe in the kingdom of heaven being within and know the divine as the formless omnipresence and omniscience.
  31. You live life as if every moment is a miracle and know that you may not always understand it and you are okay with it.
  32. You know that all paths that originated from the same source will all lead back to it, so you don’t need to fight for or defend your path. You truly believe in “live and let live.”
  33. You know/feel that you are the microcosmic representation of the macrocosm—as within, so without.
  34. You look at yourself in the mirror, and see a deep mystery staring back at you inviting you to explore. Until now you saw yourself as only a physical organism. Now, you see every cell of your body as a mysterious creation of divine love.
  35. You experience moments of peace, bliss, and self-love that expand to include everything and everyone around you (and, BTW, they all benefit from it).
  36. You are naturally attracted to mystical practices such as contemplation and meditation.
  37. You start to feel a tension within you between long held beliefs and your newly expanding consciousness and realize the falsity of those beliefs and start to let them go.
  38. You experience and express more and more self-confidence and courage that results from your inner anchoring in peace and harmony and start to shed the fear-based living.
  39. You realize that teachers, experiences and opportunities come to you, as if by magic, for you to learn and grow.
  40. You start to see mystery in everything you study. Spiritual literature that didn’t make sense to you before, suddenly starts to make sense. You start to see the spirit at work in all areas your life and fields of your study and work.

If you have one or more of these qualities, you are (or becoming) a mystic. Embrace it! Become a scientist! Experiment within the field of your own being, consciousness and awareness, to realize the ultimate truth or reality that is already dwelling in you. Paths are many, choose those that you resonate with.

I always wanted to know about my past life, could you please throw some light and guide on this .

    • Annapoorna, I believe that if knowing about past life is needed for you to grow in this life, then you will have glimpses of it/them come up during meditation.

There seem to be some therapist/practitioners who claim to do “past life regression” work, you may want to look them up if you are interested. I am not one and I don’t know any.

    • Dear Kishore,

Only requirement is that we feel eligible. Siddhars have gone beyond all that judgement, and they are here to help whomever earnestly wants their help. There are many Kriya lineages and only one that I have experience with is http://www.babajiskriyayoga.net/ . Read their web site. If you resonate with what they say, you can contact them to find out when they give initiation in Bangalore. They have a small center in Bangalore as well. Hope this helps.

      Cheers,
      Desika

What if at a certain time in your life, all the above symptoms or signs that you describe of mysticism existed – and after a decade everything seems to have dried up? What could that indicate?
